HM2(FMF) Scott MacDonald closes his eyes
and takes a deep breath before exhaling into a
song he knows -- and feels -- by heart. The
first words to the Star Spangled Banner fill the
room and he is in his element as a singer and
service member, fulfilling his duties with
patriotic flair.
But don't be mistaken. While singing is his
full-time passion, it is only his part-time job.
When he's not breaking hearts with his voice,
he's mending them as a Navy corpsman trained
in emergency medicine.
His job remains the same in that he still takes care of
people. It is his motivation to do so that keeps him
interested in both the art of medicine and music.
"I have compassion for people," MacDonald explains.
"My job means something to me...and music is the
same way. The music that I write and sing has to
mean something.
"I feel like if I haven't brought a tear to someone's
eye, I haven't done my job."
Tears of happiness are his goal, clarifies MacDonald
with a smile. Staying in the Navy and being a great
dad are his other goals, he adds with an even bigger
smile.

MacDonald, 28, has served the Navy for 10 years. Originally from Staten Island, N.Y., his
past assignments include Maryland, Virginia, and schooling in North Carolina.
He says he gained his best experience in medicine working with Marine Corps units out of
Orlando, Fla. However, his most valuable lesson in caring came from being a father.
Dealing with a different type of "emergency medicine," the single dad says he's also
become pretty good at putting Band-Aids on his 5-year-old daughter, Rebecca.
Currently stationed at the National Naval Medical Center (NNMC), MacDonald has
temporarily stowed his first aid kit for an administrative position in the hospital's Manpower
office. He admits his desk duties are drastically different from his days as a "field doc."
